PBS News Hour Interview

  • PBS News Hour | Effect of federal funding cuts on pediatric cancer research | Season 2025

Federal funding cuts to pediatric brain cancer research are profoundly impacting efforts to find treatments for these deadly tumors, which are the leading cause of pediatric cancer-related deaths. The Trump administration's decision to cease supporting a federally funded research network has raised concerns among advocates and medical professionals about losing hope for families affected by these aggressive cancers. Experts emphasize the importance of continued investment in research to improve outcomes and develop effective therapies for children battling brain tumors.

  • 💛 Advocating from the Heart. | Misha Mehta

💛 Advocating from the Heart. Fighting for Every Child. 💛 This week, I had the honor of advocating alongside Michele Lew and Sandeep Kolte during the Children’s Hospital Association’s Family Advocacy Day #FAD2025 in Washington, D.C. A powerful reminder that behind every data point and policy gap is a child, a family, and a story that deserves to be heard. I shared my son Neev’s story, the joy he brought into the world, the courage he showed during his battle with DIPG, and the urgent need for change that his legacy demands. In rooms filled with lawmakers and hospital leaders, we didn't just speak, we showed what’s at stake when childhood illness is met with inadequate funding, fragmented care systems, and shrinking access to life-saving innovation. Stanford Children's Health | Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford has stood with families like mine, not only delivering world-class care but listening, uplifting, and fighting for solutions that go beyond hospital walls. Together, we carried forward the voices of children who can’t speak for themselves and the families who never imagined needing to. Pediatric health care shouldn’t depend on zip codes or fundraising. It should be a national priority. And thanks to days like this, it’s clear we’re not alone in believing that. To every policymaker who listened, and to every hospital, parent, and child who shared their truth: thank you for reminding me that advocacy is action, and that love-fierce, grief-carved, and hopeful, is our most powerful tool for change. Maturation of complex neural circuitry necessary for high-level cognitive and motor functions occurs throughout childhood and young adulthood. Central to the process of developing or strengthening these functional neural circuits is the generation of new glial cells for neuronal support, synapse formation and myelination. In some brain regions, such as the hippocampus, new neuron production occurs throughout postnatal life and is believed to subserve normal memory function. The Monje Lab studies the molecular and cellular mechanisms of postnatal neurodevelopment. This includes microenvironmental influences on neural precursor cell fate choice in normal neurodevelopment and in disease states. Areas of emphasis include neuronal instruction of gliogenesis, cellular contributions to the neurogenic and gliogenic signaling microenvironment, molecular determinants of neural precursor cell fate, and the role of neural precursor cells in oncogenesis and repair mechanisms. As a practicing neurologist and neuro-oncologist, Dr Monje is particularly interested in the roles for neural precursor cell function and dysfunction in the origins of pediatric brain tumors and the consequences of cancer treatment.

Dr. Michael Prados PNOC Founder

  • Dr. Michael Prados' UCSF Profile

Charles B. Wilson, MD, Endowed Chair in Neurological Surgery, UCSF Professor Emeritus, Dept. of Neurological Surgery and Dept. of Pediatrics, UCSF Box 0372, UCSF San Francisco, CA 94143-0372 Dr. Michael Prados has over 35 years' experience at UCSF in treating both adults and children who have brain tumors. His current research interest is translational and clinical research in pediatric neuro-oncology. He is co-Project Leader of the Pacific Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Consortium (PNOC) and co-Scientific Chair of the Children's Brain Tumor Network (CBTN). Dr. Prados has participated in over 120 clinical research protocols from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), UCSF, and Industry studies -- including 22 early phase trials for children with brain tumors in the last 10 years. He has published over 350 peer-reviewed articles and has been continuously funded by the NIH since 1990. He is currently Professor Emeritus and holds the Charles B. Wilson Endowed Chair of Neurosurgery. In 2014 he was awarded the Victor Levin Award for lifetime clinical research excellence from the Society of Neuro-Oncology.

  • Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Consortium

To challenge current paradigms and rapidly advance therapies that are globally accessible and transformative for children and young adults with brain tumors. The Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Consortium (PNOC) is an international consortium with centers within the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia. We are dedicated to bringing new therapies to children and young adults with brain tumors. Our goal is to improve outcomes by translating the latest findings in brain tumor biology into better treatments for these children.
